GERMAN FEAR OF A DEBACLE 'A letter found on a German soldier made prisoner before Verdun speaks of the ill-health prevalent among great numbers of the enemy troops returning from the front. The writer says it would bo a good thing if the war finished soon, so that the country's youthj may not bo destroyed by phthisis. Another letter saysl—"lf the Allies pierced our front we should probably witness a debacle like that of the Austrian troops. Home of the Genmans who arc now guarding the frontier would be glad to be surrounded, so that they might give themselves up without fear of the machine guns, placed behind them." The distress of their families is the principal cause of this discouragement.
