A GREAT RECEPTION. VENIZELOS HAILED AS LEADER. LONDON, Oct 10. Mr. Ward Price reports from Salonika that a great crowd receivec Venizelos with flowers and shouts of welcome. While Venizelos received the blessings of Greek bishops, speeches were made by notables. Sarrail advanced and warmly shook hands. .BULGARIAN HEAVY LOSSES. ROME, Oct 10. The "Agendia Nazionale" states tha Bulgarian losses in west Macedonia totalled 30,000, and were exceedingly •heavy on the Struma. On the Dobrudja Bulgaria is entirely without reserves.
AN AUSTRiAN COMMUNIQUE. LONDON, Oct 10. An Austrian communique says: There was stubborn street fighting in Brasso before the Roumanians retired. Falkenhayn's troops drove back the Roumanians near Loerdburg, southwest of Brasso, and stepped them near Foldvar, north of Brasso. Reinforcements are en route from the Haromszek region. The army of General Von Aarz is now penetrating the Goergany mountains, further north. BRASSO EVACUATED. ROME, Oct 10. The Roumanians have evacuated Brasso in order to avoid £he destruction of other public buildings whereon the enemy is firing. The army's position is excellent. .DANISH SUBMARINE SUNK. COPENHAGEN, Oct 10. A Norwegian steamer ran over and sank the Danish submarine Dykker, in the Sound. Three were rescued and six killed. ROUMANIAN COMMUNIQUE. SITUATION UNCHANGED. BUCHAREST, Oct. 10. A communique states: German aeroplanes bombed warehouses in the northern station. The damage is insignificant. • The situation on the fronts is unchanged. We hold the heights dominating Petroseny and the Giu Valley, and are in possession of the Caineri defile.
Investigation has revealed numerous cases of trinitratoluol buried in the German Legation garden, also flagons labelled Virus Torve, intended to propagate a simultaneous epidemic in men and Horses. ATHENS, Oct 10.
A Bucharest communique says: T'-.i.■ Roumanians in the Brasso district were obliged to retire towards the northern ends of the Carpathian passes.
Minor infantry artillery actions were favourable to the Roumanians in the Caineni and Vulcan passes.
There are fierce artillery duels "east of Zimicea. Danube artillery patrols had engagements in the Dobrudja. NINE VESSELS SUNK. A POSER FOR AMERICA. NEW YORK, Oct 10. The captain of the Nantucket nightship states that nine vessels wer-» sunk on Sunday, but the names of only six were obtainable. In one instance American destroyers were so thick on the scene that the commander of the submarine asked two to make way to allow, him to blow up his prey without damaging the others. Passengers of the Stephano declare that they were attacked by U6l. Tne captain of the lightship heard the submarine fire three shots at the Stephano. None hit. The Stephano lowered boats and transferred the passengers to torpedo boats standing by. Officers of the American destroyers boarded the Stephano and ascertained that the passengers and crew were safe. Then the submarine crew boarded and opened the sea cocks. Three Allied warships are off Nantucket, also American patrol vessels, with the object of protecting neutrality and effecting rescues.
The steamer Frederick VIII, with Mr. Gerard aboard, is reported 300 miles off Nantucket. Officials of the Cunard, French, and Italian lines declare that their vessels, which carry guns, will sail as usual.
