TAIHAPE BOWLING CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Taihape Bowling Club was held on Friday evening in the Fire Brigade Hall, there being a large attendance. The annual report stated that last season a very comfortable pavilion and clubhouse had been built, and haa been much appreciated by the ladies and players. The club’s thanks were due to Mr. Riddick for a club flag and two window sashes, to Mr. Hesketh for flag-pole and labour; to Morgan and Co. Ltd. for plumbing material and ridging; to R. Wilson and Co. Ltc. for roofing iron; to Mr. Aldridge tor nails; to Mr. Mitchell for plumbing, and to Dr. Boyd, Messrs De Latour, Somerville, Joblin and Stanley, for donations. The membership for last season was much lower than usuat. there being only 32 members registe* ed as financial, and the committee desired to impress upon members how necessary it was to use every effort to substantially increase the membership for the ensuing season. The committee had estimated the expenditure for the next season at £lB6, and receipts at £l6 ss, so that it would be necessary to enrol 52 members at £3 3s each to complete the season without any liabilities other than the Ban*, overdraft.
The club had commenced the season as holders of the Hum Challenge Cup, and after defending it successfully against Palmerston North lost it by » narrow margin to St. John’s. The committee desired to thank the lady friends for their contribution to the pleasure of the season in gracing tne green with their presence and in providing and dispensing refreshments. jThey recognised that their unselfish assistance enhanced the pleasure derived from the season’s play.
The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following new members were elected: —Messrs J. Mortland. F. M, Marlow, H. Mercer, L. L. Joll, R. McLaren, H D. Bond, G. N. Mac Diarmid, H. Alexander. Officers were elected for the ensuing season as follows: President. Mr. J. F. Thurston; vice-president, Mr. D. Neagle; hon. treasurer, Mr. F. Yarnham (re-elected); secretary, Mr. W. Drayton (re-elected): auditor, Mr. C. Masters; committee, Messrs J. McKenzie, J. de Luen, A. James, H. Mercer, and J. P. Aldridge.
It is said that a meat-buying firm in New Zealand suspected of having American affiliations have been taking advantage of a mysterious early door tip about the rise in the price of meat, and have been buying lambs right and lelt. It is said that they have mopped up between, forty and fifty thousand lambs in the Rangitikei district^ —Manawatu Times. The Christchurch correspondent of ■the Dunedin Star telegraphs —The big Armour Packing Company,, of Cricago, are starting operations in the meat trade in New Zealand, with Christchurch as their centre, under the title Armour and Co., Ltd (Australasia)_ Mr N. W. Kingdom, general mauagern of Armour and Co. (Australasia), in an interview, denied that the Armour Company is a meat trust. “We are here to do business in the same way as other firms,” he said. “We have goth nothing to hide. We are coming right out into the open, and putting all our cards on the table.”
