LEMBERG THE OBJECTIVE. BRUSILOFF'S HUGE OFFENSIVE. UNPRECEDENTED ARTILLERY FIRE PETROGRAD, Oct. 5. The move forward towards Lemberg •has recommenced. The whole southern sector of the Russian front is ablaze. Brusiloffs immediate objective is Vladimir-Volynsky and the railway at Kovel. The Russians have possession of enormous reserves of ammunition, and ctre shelling the Austrian line with unparalleled ferocity. A terrible battle at B'rzezany has already been wager for three days. During that time the Russians under cover of artillery fire, crossed the Zlota Lipa and captured the opposing heights. STRUGGLE EXPECTED AT KOVEL. THE CRUCIAL SECTOR. PETROGRAD, Oct. 5. The Germans are endeavouring at all costs to hold the space between Kovel and Lemberg, whereon mainly depends other issues of German strategy on the Russian front. It is scmi-officially stated that Germany, since September, Has despatched twelve divisions to the southern sectors. With twelve despatched in June, altogether 24 divisions have reinforced the south western front. Out of twelve divisions which arrived in September, nine divisions are now Cefending the Kovel approaches, where Hindenburg in the middle of September had concentrated 31 divisions. Russian critics predict obstinate resistance at Kovel. They opine tliat there will be most formidable concentration whereby can be gauged the importance the enemy command attaches to the. Vladimir-Volyniski region.
