THE GENEROUS TUWHARETOAS. GIVE 25,301 ACRES. TO SETTLE MAORI SOLDIERS. 4. The Hon. Herries recsiPw the following telegram from the Hon. Dr. Pomare, from Tokaanu, on the 3rd: “I conferred with a representative gathering of Tuwharetods at Waihi, Tokaanu, yesterday. It was decided byTe Heu Heu Tukino and Kingi Topia and the Tuwharetoa tribe to set asidethe Ohauko block of 25,301 acres foisettlement by returned Maori soldiers irrespective of the ti’ibe or tribes to which they belong. The land is to be an absolute gift from the Tuwiiaretoa people to the Maori soldier settlers. It gives me much pleasure to bo able to inform you of this great selfsacrifice -made by one of our Maori tribes, and I know that you will appreciate both the spirit w'hich prompt ed the making of the gift, and the national character of the same. Kia Ora. ”
It is understood that some of the East Coast tribes have views of a similar nature. Money has also oeen freely subscribed by the natives ror patriotic purposes. Yesterday he received £SO for patriotic funds from the chiefs of the Te Arawa tribe at Roto-iti,
