RED CROSS APPEAL.
. "OUR DAY." As has already been announced,, the British Red Cross Society have made arrangements for a special appeal throughout the British Empire by street and other collections, for the purpose of raising money, to be entirely devoted to our wounded soldiers and sailors from England and overseas. In connection with the advices recei3§|i by the local branch of the Society, ~a public-greeting was held in the supper rooms of the Town Hall last evening there being a fair attendance. The chair was occupied by the Rev. W F. Stent
Various suggestions were put forward as to the actual day on which the local appeal should be made, and finally it was decided to select Monday the 23rd inst, Labour Day. Various suggestions as to the form in which the appeal should be made were forthcoming, and it was decided to hold a monster procession. All the public bodies, railways, companies, sawmills in the district, business people and school children are to be asked to assist, and there is every prospect of a most successful and memorable function being held. A sub-committee (with power to add) was set up to organise the procession, and all who desire to assist are asked to meet at the, Town Clerk's office at 3 p.m. on Wedn^flay The procession will be taken to the Domain oval, where a committee or ladies will dispense tea for a nominal charge, and where sice shows of all kinds will be in full swing. The ladies are filled with enthusiasm; they are fully aware of the urgent necessity of the appeal and the huge benefits to he received as a result, and if the men will put as much enthusiasm ana energy into their part of the programme, then success is a foregone conclusion. '• In addition to this, a personal appeal is to be made through the post to all residents of the district, so that every person will have a chance to give their "mite" to this deserving cause. Mr Nicholls, proprietor of the Three Stars Pictures, recently made an offer ; to give a picture show, the Society to j have the gross takings. The meeting last night, decided to accept the offer with thanks, and to hold the pictures on. the night of Labour Day. The Committee intend to leave no stone unturned to make the whole day a success. Taihape has always given handsomely to these special appeais, and it is to be hoped that this appeal will prove to have been a record 0110 for collections. . The casualty lists which .have bee»« published this week will undoubtedly rouge everyone to action; the need for Red Cross funds is greater than ever, and no one can refuse this urgent appeal. *' - The committee and sub-committee= for the Labour Day function will meer every Saturday evening, and all willing helpers are given a cordial invitation to attend. ft v -'--;. - RED CROSS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS. 1 WORK RECEIVED FOR SEPTEMBER Taihape. — 3 suits pyjamas, 4 bed jackets, 10 pairs socks, 1 pair bed socks, 12 knitted face cloths.
