A SOLDIERS’ SETTLEMENT.
(Our Own Correspondent) The returned soldiers’ settlement in the Otamakapua Blcok at Ohingaiti is the scene of great activity just now. Each of the young settlers Is rapidly felling the manuka which covers his frontage, and getting the land nearer to a condition which will give some return for the labour expended. Some have done the work with their own labour, but those whose health or wounds still keep them from doing heavy labour have had to get their work done by contract. Each section is beginning to show a small piece of ploughed ground, on which the young ‘cocky” hopes to grow his potatoes, and, in some cases a small amount of oats. Fencing, as yet, has not been the order of the day, but judging from the rapidly accumulating stacks of posts, wire. etc. on the roadside, that work is to occupy their minds shortly.
