GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OP RECENT FIGHTING. ENEMY’S LOSSES VERY FRIGHTFUL. A VAST GRAVEYARD. STILL MUCH FIGHTING TO BE DONE. LONDON, Sept. 19. Mr Philip Gsibbs says:—The Germans undo a couple of attempts against our ’e-fences round Martinpuich and Courcelette, but our long range guns prevented their coming within rifle range. The enemy’s losses in the recent battles have been very frightful One of our staff officers estimates them at eight to one. His dead lie solid in certain parts of the battlefield, and across the ridge, when the wind blows, comes a. dreadful miasma of corruption and blood. The whole ridge at Delville Wood and Ginchy is one great graveyard. The enemy’s artillery is still very strong, but some of his batteries are nc-rilcaslv situated from-our now ... positions There are indications that 5 he is shifting them backward. There is evidence that the enemy had prepared a g-cat counter attack at the time our was launched. Mouquet Farm captured by a dash across a short strip of No Man’s Land. The enemy retreated within a tunnelled ' dug-out having at least two entrances, from whence they maintained their fire through loop-holes.
