IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

THE MILITARY SERVICE ACT.

The Recruiting Board desires to give a final reminder to men of military age of the duties imposed on them in connection with the enrolment of the Expeditionary Forces Reserve. Corea in men seem to be still in some doubt about their duties under the Military Service Act. The posters, pip.caros, advertisements, news paragraphs and ; lantern slides have explained that tne j task of the Government Statistician is 1 to have a complete inventory of the military man power of New Zealand. He has to ascertain the number-of men eligible for service in defence of their country, and their addresses i IA personal onus is on every man of military age to be properly enrolled tn the Expeditionary Force Reserve and I to report promptly any change, or address that may take place thereafter. Each reservist must give unmistakeable information to enable the author ities to keep in touch with him. Persons who shiftabout from one district to another must take all reasonabH* pxecautions to enable the authorities to communicate with them w&iout atoiclable loss of time. Vague addresses, such as “c/o Post Office” are

not acceptable; they do not comply with the Act. For their l own protec- , tion reservists must apply for eertifl'c- ' ates of enrolment. They are advised to be content temporarily with the acknowledgement cards. If they do not receive acknowledgement cards within a reasonable time after forwarding their applications they should ( at ouce communicate again with the 'Government Statistician j The Statistician’s office is working at very high pressure on a task which has to be done satisfactory and completely iii one operation. First comes the enrolment, and next is the issue of certificates of enrolment. Everything will be done carefully and thoroughly in time, but all things cannot be done a I

once. Third in order of urgency !s the treatment .of certificates c£ rejection or exemption already held by numbers of Reservists. The original certificates should be posted by registered letter to the Government Statistician, so that the Register may be endorsed with the fact that these Reservists have previously volunterr&J and not been accepted for service* Ihe Reservists concerned, however, are advised to defer the posting for three or four weeks; if the documents are sent on they must await their turn, which cannot come for three or tour weeks, till other and more urgent matters have received attention. Jt is also open now to any man who has previously volunteered and not been accepted because of medical unfituess

to apply to the Commandant, under Section 7, Sub-section 2of the Mili* tary Service Act for his discharge from tho Reserve, lie should in his ap plication, state the number or date and office of issue of his rejection cer»‘ tificate. It is proposed in every case to ask the reservist who thus applies for this discharge to go before a medi cal board for re-examination, and on. the report of such Board the Command ant will detemine whether or not a discharge from the Reserve is to be granted. W. P. MASSEY, Chairman.
