PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.

A meeting of "the Taihape Patriotic Society was held last evening, when there were present, the Mayor (Mr A. L. Arrowsmith) and Messrs J. P. Aldridge, G-. Bray, D. Ncagle, A. James, W. MeLennan, G. Wiightson, Christie (Ohakune) and Father Connolly. Mr E W. Smith, M.P. forwarded his resignation owing to the fact that he was unable to attend enough meetings to comply with the rules, and stated that he would at all times take a keen interest in the work of the Society and render all possible assistance.

On the motion of the chairman the resignation was received with regrefLAn appeal for funds was receivms_ from the Anzac Club at Palmerston North, and it was resolved to forward a reply pointing out that Mr P A. McHardy was reported to have stated that the Sheep Art Union had produced funds sufficient to build and endow a Soldiers' Club in Palmerston North suitable for all'time

A report from the Returned Soldiers Committee was read and adopted. The Treasurer (Mr L. E Deacon) reported that the Wounded Soldiers Fund credit amounted to £ll,OlO 14s 7d, and the local Relief Fund credit to £376 5s lid

The question of the Taihape quota of each reinforcement having to leaveby the 6 a.m. train was brought up by Mr W. McLtnnan, and it was pointed out that the men had to wait a whole day in Palmerston North, and that Ohakune men did not leave till 'Monday night. A short discussion followed, and on the motion of Mr G # Wrightson, seconded by Mr McLennan, it was resolved to write the Defence Headquarters, asking if arrangements could be made for, the men to leave by tW 10 a.m. train for Palmerston North."
