IS THE END NEAR?
Thus the "Feilding Star”: —Is the end of the war nearer even than we hope or think? Wool-buyers in Wellington are wagering that New' Zealand’s 20th Reinforcements, practically completed, will not be ueeded for active service—will not leave our shores. The cableman tells us that an official in Washington, U.8.A., who is in close touch with Allied sentiment, states that the Allies are discussing drastic peace terms for the enemy. These include the cession of Heligoland back to England, the neutralisation of the Kiel Canal, and the demolition of some of the strongest fortifications on, the German frontier. The Allies believe the military situation, from their point of view, is constantly improving, "and that peace will bo dictated at Berlin after a triumphant march through Germany.” We have always held that our boys from overseas, who now' pride themselves on being ‘'Bin: Massey’s tourists,” will yet tour Germany as the compulsory guests of th-o Kaiser. But bow soon?
