COUNCIL OF EDUCATION.
SECOND ANNUAL MEETING. WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. The second annual meeting of theCouncil of Education was held to-day in camera after the formal opening,, at which the- Hon. Hanan (Minister of Education) spoke. He said the Council was on its trial. He believed that it was capable of doing good ~ work, and that the result of its deliberations would be. conducive to sound and practical educational advance. He looked, however, in cdnse'quehce or certain lessons of the war and the bonditions that- were ' to a great forward movement in connection with education which would literally involve the recasting of views aha 1 educational ideas throughout;'the Empire. Problems would arise*'the solution of w.hich would be helped bj^ : right education•'. There' would be .a- de : mand for high, efficiency in work, and seieritific : and technical edu ; ' cation would come to the front and' re * ceive that prominent-placein connection - with J educational work which it merited. The feeling of the House of Representatives and the country was that there was need and room for improvement in connection with the work done in various branches of edu cation, and they must move forwar<Ton the line of thoroughness and efficiency. As they had a national scheme of education, and wished to make it more efficient, it was desirable that more Should be done in the way or combination and linking up- various- t , branches. He wanted the Council to understand that some reforms were necessary. People expected reforms in certain directions. Had the National Cabinet not determined to confine legsilation to matters concerning/ the war he would have introduced legislation.' enabling him to give effect to some of his views in order to make education, more practical and efficient.
