ARCTIC EXPLORATION.
i STEFFANSON'S EXPEDITION. I NEW YORK. August 17. No official news as to the northern section of the expedition, bur Wilkins
reported that the schooner had boon beached at Cape Kellett. Another
schooner was unable to proceed father north than the unnamed island on the west bank of the island. The
ship Polar Bear, under Steffanson, unsuccessfully attempted a voyage to the west banks cf the island in 1915, and was forced to return, wintering', between Banks Island and Victoria Island. Plans were made to spend 191 G in obtaining mere informati.cn shout the land discovered by Steffanson in 1915. The Steffanson party started the exploration in May, and intend to remain as long as possible and spend the summer in the northern islands, rejoining the Polar Bear at Melville Island in the fall. It is expected that the Polar Bear will spend the winter of 1916-17 at Melville Island. The ncrthern party intend to return in 1916, biri hardly anticipated that this would be possible, owing tc the scattering: o! the parties. The explorers were well supplied for two years. The scientist of the southern partybrought many tons of specimens. The re-mapping of the Bathurst Island regions corrects the errors in Sir Jc.hn Franklin's and Dr Anderson's reports. Steffanson may not' return until 1918. After remaining) with the Steffanson party, Wilkins made a trip over the ice and joined the southerners. Steffanson tcld him that a new land had been discovered, which might be described as another Greenland. LONDON August 17. Dr Anderson, leader of the northern section of Steffanson's expedition, has returned home from Alaska. Over 150 Islands were charted in the region heretofore mapped as the Chapman, Lewis and Maicet islands. In the Bath urst Inlet a great field was investigated where native copper is widely distributed in extensive quantities. The expedition made valuable ethnological and archaelogical collections, including over a thousand specimens of birds and mammals.
