FROM A DRAPER'S COUNTER.
TO SUCCESSFUL FARM WOfiK.;^
A Manawatu farmer, who has a herd of 40 cows, has solved the labours problem in a matter quite satisfactory: to liimself and all concerned (reports the "Standard"). Eecently his man left him to go into camp, but before doing so stated that his fiancee, who was an assistant in a draper's shop in Wellington, was most anxious to take up rural life, and to keep his berth warm while he was away serving his country. The,farmer was naturally sceptical about employing the young lady, but at the earnest request of the employ he decided to give the girl a trial, and promised, at the same time, that she would, if suitable, receive the same wages as her soldier lover. The young lady duly ar.rived, and her first duty was to acquire a knowledge of the intricate working of the milking machines, which she did n a comparatvely short time. The now assistant has now been in his employ for over a month, and has given every satisfac-
tion. One evening, in going home rather late from a sale, he found to his surprise that she had started the machines and had milked IS cows. The farmer says that if all the girls are as game as this young lady, dairy M farmers in the North Island need haveno qualms about solving the labourproblem in the coming dairy season.
