WAR NEWS.

AN AUSTRIAN COMMUNIQUE. LONDON, August 10. An Austrian communique says: We captured the heights eastward of Warochta, on the Upper Pruth, and withi drew from the vicinity of Ottynia to previously prepared positions. We repulsed strong attacks on Bothnier's southern wing. The fighting in Volhynia is of the most violent description. The Bussians were driven back at certain points, also near Kisiclin and the Stokhod salient. Siberian and Guard troops, attacking in. masses near Kaizowka, were everywhere driven back. The whole field fronting our positions was covered with corpses as the result of the enemy's suicidal methods of fighting.,

FRITZ'S FIGHTING TRICKS,

BE AYE BL'T UXCHIYALEOUS,

DIETY YVOEK AT THE CROSS EOADS.

LONDON. July 31

A returned corporal describes the last preparations before the attack at Pozicrcs. On the 21st the Australians occupied the old German trenches, about 100 yards from the new German line, and on the outskirts of the village. In order to facilitate a charge it was necessary to build a trench in No Man's Land. Two working parties went out, each man digging from shell hole to shell hole with pick and shovel. The Germans smelt mischief and we sent out scouts, "who," to quote the young soldier, "came up to me and said, 'There's a dead German over there.' I was suspicious, but went to examine, and saw a Hun lying face downAvards on the ground across his rifle. I gave him a good prod with the point of my bayonet, and he jumped and yelled. When I hauled him in as a prisoner he was found to be in possession of a field telephone. "Despite a heavy shelling the trench was completed, and the parties returned at dawn. The initial attack on the village was launched from the

new trench soon after midnight, the Anzacs storming the position allocated to them with comparative ease. But the subsequent house to house fighting —in which w 3 were nearly all wounded —was unimaginably bitter. A very old heavy Gberman sergeant fought with indescribable fury, ond if they were as clean as they are game they would be fine adversaries."
