ACTIVITY IN HEMP MARKET.
jWELLINGTON, Thi s day. The High Commissioner's cabled market report, dated London, August sth, is as follows. (Note quotations unless otherwise specified, are average market price s on spot): Meat. —There is no material change in
the market. New Zealand mutton and lamb are in small supply, but then; are good supplies of Home-killed mutton and English lamb. The hot weather is checking the demand for meat. Argentine beef arrivals are very, small, with prices hardening. There;' is no New Zealand ox beef on the market. A poor demand exist s for secondary quality New Zealand cow beef. New

Better.—The market closed firm at 'an advance. Danish salted 182/ to 186/,- Irish creamery, salted 164/tol6B unsalted 166/ + o 168; Canadian salted 168 to 170/; unsalted 170/ to 172/; New Zealand sailed 172/ to 176/; unsalted 172/ to 176/; Argentine unsalted 166/ to 168/.
Cheese.—The market is firmer. Canadian whi-i' 9?/ to 94; coloured 92/ to 94/; good to p.r.e quality, white, 90/ to 91/; English Cheddar 102/ to 106/; New Ze.dand srocks, light white in small supply, 92/ to 93/, occasional.y 95/; coloured 92/ to 94/. At August Is it is estimated that the Canadian and the States cheese stocks in London, Liverpool and Bristol were 191,000 boxes, against 332,000 at the same time last year. It is estimated that New Zea land cheese stocks in London 'and Bris tol are 13,500 crates, against 7,250 at the same time last year. Hemp.—The manilla market is firmer on account of .speculative operations, but there is no trade demand. The New Zealand market has been rather more active during the last fewdays, and the demand is chiefly for afloat hemp. Government graded fan* Manila hemp, per ton, £sl 10/; good, fair, New Zealand 49/; fair 47/. August and November shipment to United States, Government graded, fair Manila, £sl; cparse £4B 5/; good fair New Zealand, £4B 10/; fair, £46 10/. The output of hemp at Manila for the week ending last Saturday was 14,000 bales. Wheat. —The market is firm owing l to reports concerning crop damage in the American spring wheat belt and Manitoba. Shipments in August: Amer ican, 65/; Canadian 60/; Argentine (afloat, 59/. j Oats.—Prices are firm owing to scar j city. Offers are as follows: Argenjtine 31/; American 32/. I [Wool.—Merino prices are nominally unchanged, but the tone of the market 1 is not quite so firm. Prices slightly declined for 'all grades of fine crossbreds, but the coarser sort s were unchanged.
