EXPLOSION IN AMERICA

TERRIFYING EXPERIENCES. NEW YORK, July 30. The explosion caused great consternation on Ellis Island. Following on the shattering of buildings, the authorities called for the ferry boats, into which the immigrants were hustled and hurried to Manhatan. Many were injured. Great damage was done by the fire, but fortunately the district is not residential, otherwise there would have been as awful loss of life. The scene of the explosion, Lehigh Valley, is a terminal one of the main points from where munitions are loaded for the Allies. There was an indescribable rattle and crash of glass falling from thousands of windows. Buildings wore torn down in a way which recalls, but on an infinitely bigger scale, the bomb raids in England. Terrified people rushed to the doorways and other cover to escape the falling glass. Many wore injured, but the number taken to the hospital has not yet been computed. Wall Street, Fulton Street and other down-town streets were like a. sea of broken glass. Morgan’s buildings arc windowless. The guests in the Astor and other fashionable hotels rushed into the streets in scanty attire. Several men who were in a building adjoining the explosion are not accounted for. . It is feared there are many bodies in the debris. It is known that a number of workmen were blown to atoms. As one barge drifted the fire crept along the hull until it reached the shells, when the air was split up by a mass of flame shooting skywards.
