PUKEOKAHU CONCERT.
A concert was held in th e Pukeokahu .School on Friday evening, the object being the unveiling of an Honours Board containing the names of exscholors who have during the present struggle answered to the call of the Empire. There was a very good attendance, well representative of the district, and the concert proved very successful.
Tho schoolmaster (Mr Platt) in opening the concert, referred to the sacrifices tht scholars had made in offering their services for the front, and he considered it. a great privilege that ivc were a branch of the Empire. He referred to the fact that the Honours Board would be handed*, down to future generations. Mr, AA . J. Theobald then unveiled, the Honours Board, and in so doing paid tribute to the men who were now serving the Empire. The National Anthem was then sung by those present, and Mr AY. Doole took the opportunity of thanking tho committee. He made reference to each man whose name appeared on the Honours Board, and recommended that the School Committee should see that tho proper record was kept, so that in later years the Board would show what had become of each member. These men, he said, had offered them lives for the safe-keeping of the generations to come. Th e work of the troops at Gallipoli and in France would be writon the scroll of fame, and. their deeds would never be forgotten. The Taihape Entertainment Committee provided the programme, and their services were greatly appreciated. Mrs Peyton opened with a pianoforte solo in her usual good style. A trio (violin, flute, and piano) by Mr S. Powell, Mr 1.. B. de T.autor and Mrs Peyton followed, their number being well applauded. Songs were rendered by Messrs S. Peyton, L. B. de Eautor, and Powell, and the juvenile members of the committee (Masters Peyton and Hay) sang “Throw us up a bob.” As a result the sum of £1 Os 7d in small silver was thrown on the stage. Messrs Peyton, de T.atour, and Powell also provided a musical sketch, which kept the audience ie a constant state of merriment. Their two numbers “The Policeman's Holiday” and “Three Blind Mice” indeed provocative of much merriment.
The accompaniments were played by Mrs Peyton, During "the evening a eake presented by Mrs Theobald was auctioned, and realised approximately £l7. The proceeds of- the sale of cake, lollies, and the takings..will be about £3O, which is to be handed'to; the Red Cross Society. I Mr and Mts Piatt, assisted by the iladies of the district, provided an excellent supper for the visitors, and their generosity was greatly appreeiated.
