ADVANCES MADE AT POZIERES
ENEMY DESTROYERS CHASED,
(Received July 25, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 24
General Haig reports that apart from mutual continuous shelling during the night, there was comparative 1 calm.
Yesterday, between Highwood and Guillemont, repeated enemy counter attacks gained no advantage. Our artillery and machine gun fire inflicted very heavy casualties. We gained ground near Highwood, in the direction of Guillemont. In the nc ghbourhood of Pozieres we secured important advantages; ir spite of stubborn enemy defence a large portion of the village is now ours. We captured two guns and sixty more prisoners. The Admiralty reports that on Saturday, at midnight, near the North Hinder Lightship, some light forces sighted three enemy destroyers, who returned with no damage. Subsequently,. off Schouwu ißank, six enemy .destroyers were engaged in a running fight. . In the United States German sympathisers had threatened to blow up H.M.A.S. Sydney on the anniversary of the destruction of the Einden. The scheme was not carried out though something happened on that day which may have meant an attempt.

Sixty thousand people attended an anti-Conscription meeting held yesterday in the Sydney Domain. When the promoters attempted to carry a resolution expressing uncompromising hostility to conscription the crowd broke the police cordon and forced the anti-con-scriptionists to stop, the meeting.
