The engineers laboured under hea\ r y shellfire to construct a bridge to enable the ca\mlry and guns to cross in pursuit of the enemy. The Austrian end of the bridge was a horrible place, being congested with dead and dying and horribly Avounded men. Many of the Austrians Avere apparently Avounded by their own guns Avhen attempting to prevent the bridging of the stream. The Austrians noAV simply refuse to fight after initial resistance. They prefer to surrender in blocks rather than risk being cut to pieces on the retreat.
