MISSING MAORI BABY,
Early on Monday morning a Maori named Louie Graham, or Atukura Kerehome (28), was found sheltering in a hut at the Auckland station, and when brought F. V. Fraser, S.M., she mentioned that she had come to town from the Thames district with a baby, and had left it with someone. The -woman was remanded till this morning to enable inquiries to be made concerning the baby. When the matter was mentioned again this morning Sub-Inspec-tor Mcllveney requested that the woman be remanded for a week. She alleged she had come from Thames with an infant ten months old, that she met an unknown person in the street, -who handed her £l, took the child, and gave her a tag with an address on it. The Maori woman declared that she had no idea of who the person was who had the baby, and the address indicated that the child’s new mother lived at Wanganui. This was the second time recently that this sort of thing had happened in Auckland with a half-caste baby, and the police desired to investigate the matter. The woman w r as remanded for a week.
