A TRAGIC AFFAIR.
CIVILIAN KILLED BY SOLDIER
CHRISTCHURCH, July 16. A tragic affair occurred in Cashel St., near the Cafe de Paris Hotel, yesterday afternoon, resulting in the death of*Frederick William Allen, a labourer aged 42, residing in Madras Street. Allen and Pte. Michael Carey, of the 16th reinforcements, on final leave, were engaged in a heated argument, Carey apparently suggesting that Alien was a shirker. The upshot was that Carey hit Allen three times in the face. Alien did not retaliate, but stood with his hands in his pockets, looking at his assailant. A constable went up to the soldier for the purpose of arresting him, but before he could do so Carey dealt Allen another smashing blow on the jaw, which knocked him down like a log, the back of Jus head striking the asphalt with tremendous force, and rendering him unconscious. Allen died in the hospital early this morning. At the time of the assault, both men were perfecUy sober. Allen was a big, heavy man. Carey is under arrest.
