DRAGOON GUARDS AT WORK. IMPORTANT CAPTURES. BAVARIAN COMMANDER AND STAFF INCLUDED. (Received July 16, 9.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 16. Sir Douglas Haig reports :—There was heavy fighitng all day in tho P ozieres-Gui iiemont section of the second line of defence. We made further important successes. W© captured, eastwards of Lougueval, in spite of desperate resistance, tho whole of the De Gdl© Wood. We repulsed a strong counter-attack, and the enemy’s losses: were severe.
Our troops northward of Bazentin-'e-Graud penetrated the third line av Eaurcnx Wood, where we obtained a lodgment. A detachment of enemy in this neighborhood was sucessfcully accounted for by a squadron of Dragoon Guards. This was the first opportunity for mounted action afforded our cavalry since 1914.
We captured the whole wood westward of Bazintin-le-Pctit, and repulsed two counter-attacks. Prisoners here include the commander of a Bavarian regiment, and Ins whole staff.
We made a further advance eastward of Ovillers and fought our way to the outskirts of Pozcres.
