Sir Douglas Haig details the action, which began at daybreak Having driven back the enemy step by step to their second system of defence, the 11th and 12th were spent in necesary preparation for a further advance. After an intensive bombardment this morning the assault was launched, and the enemy werJJJfriven from their trenches along thef 'hole of the front wo attacked. The result was an all-day battle. W,e have possession of the enemy’s second position from Bazantin-le-Petit to Longueval; capturing Trones Wood. Our fiite completely crushed two determined!. counter-attacks on our new position. Later in the day the Germans, by a fierce counter-attack, recaptured VBazantin-I e-Petit, hut were immediafiSy driven out.
