DRYING THE ZUYSER ZEE.
The problem of removing the water from toe Hooded district or North Holland has not yet been solved. About 4U,000 acres are now mandated in that province (writes the American Commercial Attache at The Hague in a recent report to Washington.) The average height to widen tae water must be lifted is only three to tour feet, but the total amount to be pumped approximates 7jOOO.OOU.UUU cubic feet. This flood has revived the project oii drying the - /.uyder /.ee. ana a Bill is*' now before the Netherlands Parliament for appropriating money for this work. The cost is estimated at-£lB,-000.000. part of which is to covec indemnities to fishermen and ror sipilar; purposes. The cost of the dams will probably lie loss than £iU,UuU,OOO. The principal dam would be aoout 15 miles long, averaging 20 feet in lie ght. One of the most important results accruing from the drying of the Zuyder Zee would bo that the new dams \>ould take the place of the several hundred miles of dykes that now protect the lowlands from the Zuvder Zee.
