BRITISH IMPROVING CAPTURED POSITIONS.
GOOD HAUL OF GUNS AND MUNITIONS.
The High Commissioner reports LONDON July 8.
General Haig reports: Heavy rain
yesterday afternoon and evening impeded operations on the Ancre and the Somme. Night we chiefly spent in improving the positions gained in yesterday’s fighting. In the neighbourhood of Gommecourt. wo bombarded the enemy's trenches with field guns and tt*-nch. mortars.
At Neuville St. Vaast. and northwards of Roolincourt. the enemy are active. They exploded a mine north eastwards of the former without damage. The enemy exploded a mine In existing craters at Hohenzollern Redoubt without advantage. North-eastwards of Hullucb. a mine destroyed a hostile gallery. . Despite unfavourable weather, our aeroplanes did valuable service in ai£|vely co-operating with .artillery, la important reconnaissance work. The> bombed a hostile aerodrome at Douai completely wrecking a hangar nnrt doing other damage., During the last few days we captured twenty guns. 5,1 machine-gun;* numbers ,o£ automatic rifles, trenen .mortars, minenwerfer and other war material
