WAIHI BULLION THEFT.

THE ACCUSED SENTENCED. 1 AUCKLAND, This Day. At the Supremq Court, William Duncan Smith, employed by the Waihi Cold Mining Company in a battery at Wakino, who had pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to having stolen bullion slimes to the value of about £2OOO, came up for sentence. Accused’s counsel said that Smith was undoubtedly a tool in the hands of a third party, who had disposed of the stolen bullion, giving Smith only a quarter of its value. Smith rendered every assistance to the police to trace this man, and restored £IOO. His Honour said the thefts had continued some time; they were skilfully done with criminal intent. He imposed a sentence of reformative treatment not exceeding eighteen months. 1 '
