AN EXTRAORDINARY AFFAIR. PALMERSTON X.. July 7. A rumour originated m Palmerston North to-night that the Kaiser and Crown Prince had been assassinated by a mob in Berlin. The % rumour soort reached the Opera House, where Sir. W. H. George was delivering a lecture on "Our Boys in Egyn?'' to a packed house. The Mayor announce I the sensational news from the platform, and the audience rose in a body, cheered, and sang the National Anthem. The ambulance men .-it Awapunl ramp gave a haka, and there were indescribable scenes of enthusiasm. Finally the "Mauawatu Times''' Office was rung up, and the rumour was contradieted. How the rumour originated JS a mystery. Some say taat it was tured on the screens of picture shows, ' but the picture managers say chat theis first intimation was from the Opera; House. A probable explanation of |jjp* rumour is that news of the noting 1 Berlin was being posted in the " Times'* window.
