GERMANS SURRENDER.

PALATIAL QUARTERS.

Received S-3 5 p.m., July r> , LONDON. July

The “Morning Post's” correspondent says he was disappointed by v,u incident between Mametz ana ?n----court. He was posted wnere he v.n> told he would see a fine “scrap.” A few hundred Germans tenaciously clung to the trenches. Our infantry supported by bombers, dashed at tin* end of the trench. The Germans threw grenades, fired a few rifle shots and ran for their lives. They lifted

up their hands and handkerchiefs, yelling “Kamerad.” Some dug-outs ere palatial. There were prodigious quantities of sausages, potted meats preserved vegetables, cheese, casks of beer, whisky, and gin. The officers rites were fitted with electric be;L to summon servants from the adjoining kitchen.

FRENCH NEARING STRIKING SUCCESS.

GERMANS LOSE VALUABLE POSITION. (Times. > Received 9-30 p.m., duly t> LONDON, July a. The “Times” Paris correspondent says it is now possible to state without exaggeration that the French south of the Somme are well on the way to a striking success. A wedge has now been driven into the German third line at Flancourt. The French are also masters of the plateau of Peronne, and are within three miles of the township. The battlefield south, of the Somme consists m t.vo zo-.c The northerly section consists of a valley in which the stream scatters its waters over large ponds and c.arshes dotted with clumps of trees, and the southerly section is a bare, -’ell-knit plateau containing de’ens ive positions. The capture of Fuillereo and the neighbouring hills enabled the French artillery to assist in the sterner struggle north of the Somme. Alter passing the German second lines the French on Monday found their way to Peronne barred by the tremendously fortified little village of Flaucourt. This was stormed with great dash, exceedingly embarrassing the Germans, because it leaves them with only three supply roads, which: the French dominate. Sometimes the roads are borne a kilometre across marshes on slender bridges which are easy marks for the artillery. Three fortified villages—-Belloy. Ensanterre and Barleux—bar the wav to Peronne, but the success on the Assevillers front will enable the French to reach open country, com pelling the Germans to evacuate Peronne.
