HEROIC SELF-DEFENCE.
AN UNPARALLELED DEED.
LONDON, July 5
An action at Gommecourt salient was one of the most heroic in Britiih history. The enemy concentrated great mass of guns here in the belief that the main attack would extend from Lille to Rove. As soon as our men left the trenches the enemy bar raged' the front and support trenches with a most infernal fire. We advanced through this barrage as if on parade and, :-u spite of heavy losses, made our way over -500 yards of no man’s land to tho enemy’s front line. The Germans behaved with great courage. They carried machine guns right througH our barrage until they met our mja «n the open and swepo them wjth fine so that Large nmnoers fell. The attack failed, but served to draw on the enemy’s reserves. It was a glorious ."c6 of self-sacrifice.
