PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE.
* —cA meeting of the Patriotic Committee was held on Friday, there being present: His Worship (Mr. A. L. Arrowsmith, chairman), and Messrs James, McLennan, Neagle, Oldham, Powell, Wrightson, and Dunn (Ohakune). The .Returned Soldiers’ Committee submitted a report dealing with seven cases, some needing relief. The following recommendations were submitted;— (1) That a sum of £SO be placed at the disposal of the Returned Soldiers’ Committee to enabie them to meet cases demanding prompt assistance. During the past month it has been found necessary to make certain disbursements as detailed in this report. We would point out that tiiese disbursements were really made without obtaining, or having an opportunity of obtaining, the sanction of the Society. (2) That an endeavour be made to arrange with some authority or person in each railway town in this patriotic district to meet returned soldiers going into their town or district, and to keep in touch with their requirements and to advise us of same. - ■ (3) That the Defence Department and the Discharged Soldiers’ Information Department be written to stating that this Society considers that when information is telegraphed advising the rqturn of invalided soldiers to this district, full particulars should be furnished, including nature of case, conveyance. required . (if any), and whether for hospital or .home, treatment, (4) That the Discharged Soldiers ’ Information Department and .the Defence Department be furnished with a list ■of the railway stations in the Taihape Patriotic District, so that we may be advised of men, .returning tq any part of this district,...; We',have reason to believe that men' have returned to portions of this district of whom we had no advice. This is doubtless owing to the departments referred to being unaware of the boundaries we have set uPOn the motion of Mr. Wrightson, seconded by Mr. Oldham, the chairman (Mr. A. L. Arrowsmith) and Mr. A. James were elected trustees of all! the funds the Society might handle* and Mr. L. E. Deacon was elected treasurer. A sub-committee, consisting of the Mayor, Messrs McLennan and Wrightson, was elected to draw up rules for the Society.
