Sir Douglas Haig reports heavy ig all day long between the Famine, the Ancre and north-ward of the Ancre as far as Gommecourt inclusive. The fight on the whole of this front continues in intensity. We captured on the right of the: Labyrinth trenches on a seven miles front to a depth of 1000 yards. We stormed and occupied the strongly fortified villages of Mont Auban and Mamaz. We gained in the centre attack, en a four miles front, many strong points. The enemy at other points are still resisting. The struggle her* is severe. The battle northward of the Ancre valley to Gommecourt is equally violent. Here we were unable to retain •v-.rtions of the ground gained by our first attacks, but retain other portions. Upwards o" 2000 Germans were prisonered, including two regimental commanders and the whole of ons regimental staff.
