SHACKLETON RELIEF EXPEDITION.
SIR DOUGLAS MAWSGN INTERVIEWED. Received 5-5 p.m., July '2. y LOXDOX, July 2. % Sir Douglas Mawson states that ar_ rangements are being made for another attempt to rescue the Elephant Island refugees by a steel vessel, which is the only type available until the Aurora is repaired. The chance of success is small. Sir Douglas Mawson adds: Everything depends upon the rapid re-fitting of the Aurora and "despatching her to Punt a Arenas, where she will pick up Shackleton. In that case rescue is practically certain. The Aurora will continue her voyage and pick up the Ross Sea party in January. Sir Ernest Shackleton had announced his intention of personally proceeding to the sea. It is understood that a suitable wooden whaler, apart from the Aurora, cannot be ontamed. It would cost £35,000 to pur. chase and refit a wooden vessel In England, but the Aurora could be fitted out for much less. Thus the Aurora may be the means of saving the castaways.
