WHAT IS THE GERMANS’ OBJECT? (Times and Sydney Sun Cables.) Received 5.10 p.m. June 2(5. PARIS, June 26. Semi-official; The Battle of Verdun has been resumed with sudden brutality and infernal violence. The heavy gun fire is of extreme fierceness, and the infantry assaults indicate that the Germans are delaying us at Verdun with the hope of either foiling our plans —whose approaching realisation threatens them —or distracting- attention while they transfer troops to Russia.
