EXHAUSTION OF WAR
In spite of bombastic utterances in the Reichstag and elsewhere conerning Germany's economic strength, reliable and impartial reports directly or indirectly lend strong confirmation I to the belief that the economic exhaustion of the Central Empires and Turkey i s rapidly approaching. The principal towns of Germany and Ausi tria are being appreciably depopulated I as the result of famine and war casuI alties. It is estimated that Berlin I has lost 800,000 of its inhabitants, ! and Dresden, Leipsic, and Munich nearly a third of their population. In Austria Hungary, Vienna has lost 700.000, Prague 50 per cent, Lemberg 60 per cent, Gratz 35 per cent, Trieste 80 per cent and Budapest 40 per cent | Economic exhaustion is still more ! marked in Turkey. In Asiatic Turkey i more than half the land is being left i uncultivated.
