THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

A RECORD SEASON. BRIGHT PROSPECTS. ADDRESS BY CHAIRMAN OF NAT lON A L ASSOCTAT! ON. PALMERSTON N., June 20, In the course of his address at the annual meeting of the National Daily Association to-day, the chairman (Mr. Morton) rererred to the productiveness of the last season, and to the large increase in primary products, notably butter and cheese, during -"he last tea years. He predicted that in the next few years our exports would show a still-further substantial increase. The hot weather of the past season had affected to some extent the quality o£ our produce, and stops would have + o he taken in future to guard against excessive temperatures. The past year had presented great opportunities' for New Zealand butter on the London market. Our greatest competitor, Denmark, did not export to the extent of former years, whilst exports .also fell off from other countries, including Australia. This led to the higher butter values which were being experi-. cnc.ecl to-day, and the fact that sucftA ’nigh prices were being obtained at" Home showed that the people of the Old Land were enjoying greater prosperity than ever before, which permited them to pay higher wages. The demand for cheese, which, however, was not so keen as butter, was brought about by the large consignments which w.ere purchased by ’the Imperial Government for the use of the troops. It was satisfactory to know that the increase in shipping freight which had been demanded recently had not been granted. Steps were taken by til© authorities in England, Thus saving thousands of pounds to the producers of this country. An increase on butter carriage had taken place, t ut on the whole the position was as satisfactory, as could be expected at this season. Referring to The difficulty of securing a supply of rennet, the chairman said that a deputation had waited upon the the Prime Minister with a view to communicating with the High Commissioner. to get into touch with the Russian Government to remove the embargo on the materia! iiom which.' rennet is manufactured, and he was glad to say that this representation was successful in its object.
