"SAILORS' DAY," SATURDAY.
-<«►< . To-morrow, Saturday is "Sailors' Day," the day on which cur town and (district lis to ihe .asked to show its appreciation, in a tangible form, of the sacrifices cf the men, who, in British warships fought for our freedom and well-being and gave their lives in our country's cause. Very many of the thousands who thus perished have left widows and orphans unprovided >r, and it becomes our duty to see that theyq don't starve. It is not a liberal response to this duty that is wanted <md merited, it is very much more, and it is hoped that cheque books will net be forgotten by those who are making hug e profits and can afford to give. The Committee of Ladies has its arrangements well in hand for gathering in a huge harvest from our settler s and "business people, are they to be disappointed? .When we retire to-nignt let our thoughts go to the children who >iave been rendered fatherless and the women who have been made widows that we might live in comfort and hoard up riches through the very same cause that has brought them the heaviest trouble. Considerable sums, including big cheques, have, it U understood, already been contributed, and when the list cf to-mcrrow's givings is published we do not think there will be one name missing therefrom, whose bearer is capable of understanding his duty to these widows and orphans of the sail- j ors who were drowned or blown to '
shreds in that recent terrible sea hat tie.
