OBITUARY.

AN OLD TAIHAPE RESIDENT-

Th e late Archibald McColl, whose funeral took place this afiteraoon, arrived in Taihapc about tweftj years ago, coming from the South 'T§land where he landed when first coming to the- colony. He first managed an estate*in this district for Messrs Ellis BrosC.-A-nd Valder, where lie remained a number of years. He then bought land at Lismore—named by him lifter his home in the old land —between Taihape and Wainui and commenced farming for h : ~

having a most successful career, and where he had lived up to the time of his decease. Mr McColl was a public spirit ed man, taking a great interest in both, general and local politics. All educational matters had a keen attraction for him, in fact, he took a prominent part in all affairs connected with the wellfare of the young. He was instrumental in much of the progress of education in his district. From its inception he was almost continuously Chairman and Secretary of the Lismore School Committe. He was noted as a fair-minded man and was consequently popular with all sections of the community. He waa a good farmer, an excellent judge of stock, particularly of sheep, and both he and the whole of his large family were held in the highest respect and esteem. The lat e Mr McGoll left his birth place upwards of 56 years ago, having been in New Zealand the whole of that time. He had been married twice and had five children as the result of each marriage. His eldest sort died; those still living from the firsfc marriage are Mr Alex McColl, farmer? Kaitiehe; Mrs ,T. living in the South Island; Mrs Godfrey of Taihape; and Mr Archibald McColl, farmer, Omatanc. By the second marriage are Miss Annie McColl, teacher, Lismore: Mrs Morgan, Kaiteike; Mr Thos McColl, farmer, Kaitieke Mr James McColl, Lismore, and Mrs Jensen; also living at Lismore. The lato Mr McColl's life was a long, honourable and successful one and he passed away at the age of 70 years, regretted by everyone who had come in contact with him.
