U.S. PRESIDENCY.

NAUSEA TING BEHAVIOUR. CHICAGO, June 9. - Pending the conferences, committees are endeavouring to patch up the difficulties. Both Conventions have gone into reces s until Friday morning. Reuter reports scenes of extraordinary enthusiasm at the Republican and Progressive Conventions. Committees sat separately throughout /Wednesday night. Neither will make approaches. When the Progressives met, a proposal to confer with the Republicans was at first howled down, but more sober counsels led to the adoption of the proposal. (When Mr. Roosevelt’s letter was read the Progressives loudly cheered his criticism of German-American intrigues. Both Conventions adjourned to allow the joint committee to confer. The hope of a compromise to-night was given up. The delegates’ processions and scenes at the Progressive headquarters baffle description. Brass bands, trumpeters and hundreds of party boosters marched through the great hotel. Professional singers mounted the stairways, and sang through megaphones songs exalting Roosevelt. Long- after midnight tumultuous crowds were making orations, dancing and yelling themselves hoarse.
