OBITUARY.

MRS JOHN OLDHAM

Every resident of this great district .■will sympathise with Mr J. Oldham, Taihape manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., in the loss, by death, of his mother, whose residence was at Brookside, Nelson. The Nelson "Colonist" in chronicling the occurrence states: —'In the person of Mrs John Oldham, death last week removed from our midst a very old resident and a lady held in the highest esteem by all with whom she came in contact. Mr Oldham, who survives his wife, came to New Zealand in 1857, and three years later returned to England to be married, bringing his wife to Nelson in ISGO. After a short residence in Nelson Mr and Mrs Old-

ham returned to England, but four years later they came back to Nelson and lived at "Brookside." Then another trip to the Old Country was undertaken, and in IS7I they returned to take up residence at Werrcneath, Wakapuaka, where they lived continuously up till two years ago. when they removed to Lown. Mrs Oldham was jo her 85th year, and her married life extended over 5(5 years. She was a daughter of Colonel Royds of the 52nd Regiment, a soldeir who had fought through the Peninsular War under Wellington; and at "Wernoth" is now the highly valued medal of the gallant soldier, with no fewer than ten clasps attached, viz., Toulouse, Orthes, Nive, Nivelle, Pyrenees', Vittoria, Salamanca, Badajoz, Cuidad. Rodrigo, and Fuentes D 'Onor. There are eight children of the marriage— Messrs Fred (New Plymouth), John (Taihape). Harold (with the 19th Hussars "somewhere in France"), and Alten (Tui), Mesdames Stafford (Mapua), Coote. (Nelson), Harris (Richmond Bay, Pelorus), and Miss Oldham (Nelson), There are a number- of grand children and one great-grand-child.
