This report originated from wireless information flashed to the Nippon Yusen Kaisha’s Sado Maru, when 1000 miles off Cape Flattery. The Sado arrived in Seattle on May 4 from China and Japan. Her officers took the report, which reached them in several wireless messages, so seriously that the vessel’s lights wore extinguished, and she made her way at top speed into the strait of Juan do Fuca with no visible evidence to other ships While the warnings were being wirelessed to the Sado Maru, the British cruiser Rainbow set out from Esquimault in search of the German commerce destroyer. Captain Gu E Stout, commander of the British Blue Fun not liner Ixon, which afeo arrived in Seattle, from Manila via Yokohama, received virtually the same warning. His message gave instructions not to answer any wireless calls that would disclose the identity of his ship, an intimation that the British authorities considered the north tran-Paciflc trade route none too safe The Matson liner Matsonia, on a return trip from Honolulu to San Francisco, also brought reports of rumours of a German' raider being seen on the course traversed by the Niagara and the Makura.Officers of the Moana and Maitai, when last in San Francisco, professed ignorance of any raider in the Pacific Ocean.
