TRIAL OF RUA.
COMMENCES ON MONDAY
An array of something like sixty witnesses is anticipated in connection with the trial of Rua, the self-styled Maori prophet, and five of his followers, arising out of the sensational events which took place on the occasion of their ! arrest in the Urewera Country. The hearing of the case has been set down for Monday next, at the criminal sessions of the Supreme ourt, over which his Honour Mr Justice Chapman is presiding. The trial will probably last fv a week. It is expected that there will be about thirty witnesses on each side Mr Selwyn Mays is to conduct the case for the Crown, and Mr J R Lundon that for the defence The charges on which the accused were committed for trial at Rotorua are as follows; — Rua Hepetipa, alias Rua Hencn-v counselling and procuring persons to murder and to discharge firearms Avith intent to resist llawful apprehension. A further charge of using seditious language calculated to affect recruiting is also pending against Rua. Awa Horomona.j doing actual bodily harm with intent to resist lawful apprehension.
