RECORD BEEF EXPORT.
AUCKLAND OUTPUT DOUBLED,
Forty thousand carcases of beef have been frozen for export during the past 10 months by the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company.. During the whole of the 1914-15 season (reports the Auckland "Herald") the cattle slaughtered at the company's works numbered 21,076 head. The present season will be easily a record in the company's operations. A heavy shipment cf frozen beef frcm Auckland recently has been followed by a distinct easing- in the demand fcr killing space. This is partly due to the fact that the greater proportion of the fat stock has been absorbed, and probably in some measure to th e fact that prices current for , prime beasts in the Westfleld markets : are higher than the export value of I 42s per 1001 b paid by the Imperial ' Meat Supply branch. There still re-
mains a very large quantity of meat I ready for shipment, and if the allocations of space are no greater than i they have been during the past few months, a steady service of frozen meat will be available until the beginning of the new season. Reports from London state that supplies for the or- i dinary market are very restricted, so I that a considerable surplus above the military requirements would be read- , ily absorbed. Stock is still being de- j livered to the Whangarei freezing \ works in sufficient mfhibers to occupy^
that plant to the limit of its capacity as it is regulated by the shippingspace available. Next week the new works of the Westfield Freezing Company will commence operations. The stock slaughtered and frozen by the Auckland company during the past 10 months comprised 48,000 sheep, 113.000 lambs, and 40,000 cattle; during the whole of last season the company handled 94,000 sheep, 116,000 lambs, and 20,167 cattle. The increase in the production of beef during the past few years has been very great, the output in 1911-12 having been only 898 head. The operations of this company alone have made Auckland th e leading port in the Dominion, so far as the export of beef is concerned.
