TERRIBLE FIGHTING CONTINUES AROUND VERDUN.

THE HUNS MAKE LARGE USE OF FLAME. FRENCH HAVE THEMWELL IN CHECK. LONDON, May 23. Thp Verdun battle continued with extreme violence throughout the nisht on both banks of the Meuse. On the right bank furious counter-at-tacks on our positions on Hill 304 completely failed. On the west ot the Meuse notably west of Hill 304, the enemy largely employed their flame apparatus, permitting them to penetrate one of our trenches, but a brilliant return of our troops compelled him to evacuate the positions occupied. On the East, despite intense preparations of artillery, the enemy attack was broken by our fire before reaching our lines. On the right bank, in the sector of Thiaumont and Douaumont, fighting of a sanguinary nature continued. The enemy, who multiplied their massed attacks in th e course of the night, suffered enormous losses, but succeeded in reoccupying a trench conquered by u s north of Thiaumont farm. Notwithstanding that, we maintained our position in the interior fort of Douaumont. Despite a lively resistance we continued to drive out the enemy who now holds only a corner of* the northeast fort. Ou the heights of the Meuse a coup de main by us on Chevaliers Wood was completely successful. i
