WONDERFUL DEVELOPMENT OF AIR FIGHTING.
ALL PREVIOUS AEROPLANE RECORDS BROKEN. MOONLIGHT RENDERS AIR FIGHTING CONTINUOUS. THEY FIGHT WITH MACHINE GUNS AND CANNON.
(Reed. 8.50 a.m.). ..NEW YORK, May 21. Aerial fighting is toe feature of operations on. the Meuse. The daily fig"ht s are no longer duels but elaborate battles in which large squadrons manoeuvre for proper light, wind and height. They open fire with a broadside effect the moment an enemy is sighted. ■ All previous records have been broken, the French chasing monoplanes have risen from the ground to a height of 3500 feet in six minutes; French biplanes have ascended 7000 feet in eleven minutes. A French Colonel say s that 500 aeroplanes are engaged reconnoitring and fighting over Verdun.
As soon as the moon rose air raids with machine guns, revolvers and cannons began and lasted till dawn. Owing to the full moon air fighting is practically continuous.
