GOING TO THE WAR
j The staff of the Taihape Daily i Times met round the stone at midI day to-day to wish the late chapel foreman, Mr. W. Church, good-bye. Mr. Church resigned his position to enlist in the 14th Reinforcements, being the fifth man Dais journal has had to farewell under similar circumstances. He leaves Taihape this afternoon on Ms return to camp from final leave. Mr. Papworth on behalf of the staff presented Mr. Church with a small token of goodwill and of the good fellowship that had/ prevailed during the time Mr. Church had been in the office. Mr. Papworth said it gave him pleasure to shake hands and say gcod-by under the necessitous circumstances. He mentioned that one member of the staff had already given his life in defence of the Empire and from what he knew he was sure that Mr. Church would not hesitate to do j likewise, the honour of the Taihape Times would be well upheld by Mr. | Church and also by the other Taihape Times men already at the front. He wished him God Speed, a busy time and a safe and sound return. Mr. Papworth then handed a cased pipe saying that it was an article that would probably remind the recipient of his fellow workmen more frequent- ( ly than any other they might have [ selected. One member of the staff remarked that if Mr. Church did his | work at the front a s he had done at the stone, there need be no doubts about who would win the Avar. Mr. Church made a very suitable reply, ( thanking his fellow Avorkmen for their kind expressions and for the token of their good feeling.
