The Supreme Court heard an action by Airthur Sehaeff againt Tingey and Co. for the recovery of £5(55 damages for injuries suffered by an accident in | Willis Street. Defendants'siad a contract to paint a building. Two employees left step-ladders on a bai'-onv during the lunch hoi.fr. Plaintiff was riding past on a motor cycle, and a gust of wind blew one ladder ovejr the balcony railing. It fell on Sehaeff, injuring his head and shoulder, and. smashing the cycle. Defendants eontended that all reasonable precautions •.vere taken and counsel asked for n non-suit on the ground that the wind was an act of God. The Chief Justice reserved the point. The jury returned ' a vdrdict for plaintiff for £225. The State has granted rent exemptions totalling £3OOO to Crown feasants gone to the front. It is simplv wonderful what a large proportion of these men have enitisted, declared Mr Massey, replying to Mr Okey's plea for special consideration for these men. The Premier added that Parliament gave him power to deal with the position last session. The policy • was that wliene Crown tenants wont to the front leaving a section unproductive no rental was expected, but there were numbers of case s where sections continue profitable.
