UPPER WANGAEHU ROAD BOARD.

The first meeting of the newly elected members of the Upper Yv'angaelui Road Board was held this morning, when there were present: Messrs. P_ Pedersen, D. Addis, G. D. Goodr,ick,. T. Bradley, and T. W. Williams. Mr. Pedersen was elected Chairman of the Board. The "thirds" schedule to the amount of £±QH 1/7 was considered and the various amounts allocated for expenditure on the various roads controlled bv the Board.

Mr. Collier was appointed the Board's representative on the Wanga-

nui County Council*.

The Clerk wag instructed to write to the Bangitikei Council, asking them to fence the Mataroa Road near, the small sawmill.

Accounts to the amount of £IOS 10/7 were passed for payment. The Clerk reported that t- T ie bank account stood in, credit to the amount of £(322 7/7/

On vacating the chair at yesterday's meeting of the Wangaehu Road the retiring Chairman gave a tieulars of the position of the Board which will be of some : interest,,to, the

ratepayers. Mr. Collier remarked . that the Board was in a better position financially at the pitesent time than it ever, had been. They now the respectable credit of £622 in the Bank, over £4OO of "thirds" accrued which would be available for spending on the roads irr the district within a very short time,, and £SOO to draw from the' Government fon subsidy on the rates In addition to this the Board would be able to borrow in nticipation of its current year's reevnue the sum of £1,500", During the last five months an unprecedented amount of rates had been collected From the beginning of December to the 31st Manch £2,050 had been collected, and from that date up to the present another £SOO had come fn. As all the Board's liabilities were paid up to date the position was that there would b e something over £2,000 availtble for spending on the roads during the curuent year. Mr. Collier hoped that the incoming Chairman would find that the members wouM work as harmoniously as thjjy had done previously and thanked those old members who were present for the consideration that they had shown him during his term of office. In conclusion, .he stated that the thanks of the Board were due to the present Clerk (Mr. A. M. Ryan), to whom was du e the credit of the position in which, the Board now found themselves. Several members eulogised the worK done by the retiring Chairman and subsequently it was resolved "That the Board's appreciation of Mr. Collier's services be recorded on Vie minutes of the Board."
