SPLENDID WORK BY BRITISH .AIRMEN. FOUR GERMAN MACHINES BROUGHT DOWN. (Reed. 5.30 p.m.). LONDON, April 29. (1 a.m., British Headquarters, 28th). This morning the enemy unsuccessfully tried to enter our trenches north of Poolingcourt, after exploding five mines, aided by an artillery and trench mortar bombardment in the Loos neighbourhood, which has been quiet since the gallant fighting .>f the 16th Irish Division, which also broke up the German attack delivered yesterday under cover of gas. Elsewhere there has been unimportant artillery firing at isolated points. There have been 24 aerial combats. Four of our machines attacked 8 flying in formation and drove a wedge in the middle of them. After 10 minutes fighting four enemy machines were brought down. One of our machines was hit, but \v e had no casualties. In another fight, a hostile machine" is believed to be hit. A French official communique states: There was violent bombardment of our positions between Pepper Hill and Douaumont. ?{fß On the night of the 27th our aeroplanes bombarded Audunte Romans, Grand Pre, and Challeranges stations, also encampments near Aspincourt.
