AUCKLAND RACES. THE AVONDALE MEETING. The Avondale races commenced with fine weather, the course being fast, and the attendance good. Maiden Handicap: Blue and Black 1, Gretchen 2, Anxious 3. All started. Won by two lengths. Time 1.16. Juvenile Apprentice Handicap: Ritasea 1, Independence 2, Waiuta 3. Scratched; Howeric and Erroneous. Won by a short head. Time 1.2 2-5. WOOD CHOPPING. SYDNEY, April) 25. The handicap wood-chopping contest at the Show was won by James Forsyth (New Zealand) with 12 sees, allowance, Mclntosh (Sydney), who was on scratch, coming fourth. In the Sweepstakes Chop, Mclntosh (scratch) was first, and Forsyth (10 secs) second. RUA’S STRONGHOLD. • SURVEY PLAN MADE. ROTORUA, April) 25. ives have left the main pah, and retired to a smaller place' two miles ’.way. A HUGE WHALE. O AMARU, April 25. A huge whale, measuring SI feet, stranded at Moeraki Heads on Friday. It was killed by a fisherman and towed into the harbour. It is said to weigh about 75 tons. The jawbones are 21 feet in length.
